Introduction It was still 14 years to the 20th century when the first cornerstone of what would become Arsenal Football Club was laid. The year was 1886 and a group of workers at the Royal Arsenal, a factory producing ammunition and other military equipment, decided to start playing football together. The team was named Dial Square FC and the first match was played December 11, 1886 against East Wanderers, a game that Dial Square easily won by 6-0. On Christmas Day the same year a meeting was held, where they decided to invest in the club with match stands and arena and all that it entails. It was also renamed Royal Arsenal. Two of the players had previously played in the Nottingham Forest and asked the club's management if it was willing to sponsor the Royal Arsenal. Forest then donated a match stand and ball to the factory workers, and this is why Arsenal are playing in red shirts.
